Aims: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to scan the text about natural disaster for details and complete the exercises given. * Teaching aids:  Tape , pictures B. Content: I. Pre  reading: 1. Warm  up: Brainstorm typhoon Q : Have you ever experienced any of these natural disasters?  Today we’re going to study some information about the natural disasters in the world. 2. Pre  teach:  (a) tidal wave : sóng thần (translation)  (a) tornado(es) : cơn lốc xoáy (picture) Natural  (adj) abrupt : bất ngờ, đột ngột (synonym) = sudden(a)  (n) shift : sự chuyển dịch, thay đổi (explanation) Change of position  (adj) funnel  shaped : có hình phễu (board drawing)  (to) suck up : hút lên (translation)  (to) erupt : phun, phun trào (visual)  eruption (n) sự phun trào * Checking: Ordering 3. T/F statements prediction (p.79) - Set the scene : There are 6 statements about the information of some natural disasters. All of you have to read them and guess whether they are true or false. a. Most of the earthquakes in the world occur in the Ring of Fire. b. The earthquake in Kobe in 1995 caused severe damage. c. A huge tidal wave traveled from California to Alaska and hit Anchorage in the 1960s. d. Typhoon, hurricane and tropical storm are different words for the same natural disaster. e. The eruption of Mount Pinatubo is the world’s largest ever volcanic eruption. f. A tornado looks like a funnel. - Get students to guess which statement is T and which is false. - Write students’ prediction on the board and get them to read the text and check. II. While reading: 1. T/F statements correction: *Key: a. T b. T c. F  ….from Alaska to California d. T e. F  …in more than 50 years f. T 2. Complete the sentences (P.79): - Have students work in pairs and complete the sentences in ex.5b on p.79. - Call on some students to read the whole sentence. - Give feedback and correct. *Key: 1. The majority of earthquakes occur around the Pacific Rim . 2. During the earthquake in Kobe, many people were killed when homes, office blocks and highway collapsed. 3. A tidal wave can only occur when there is an abrupt shift in the underwater movement of the Earth. 4. In Australia, a tropical storm is known as a cyclone. 5. The Chinese language gave us the word “typhoon”. 6. A tornado is a type of storm that passes overland below a thunderstorm and sucks up anything that is in its path. III. Post  reading: Asking and answering - Divide the class into 4 groups, give each group a poster and a pen. - T asks question by question, groups write the answer on posters and hand up. - Give points for each group. 1. Why do people call the Pacific Rim “ Ring of Fire”? 2. What will happen when there is an abrupt shift in the underwater movement of the earh? 3. What does “typhoon’ mean? 4. Where is Mount Pinatubo? 5. What did a tornado lift in Italy in 1981? *Key : 1. Because 90% of earthquakes occur around the Pacific Rim. 2.Tidal wave will happen. 3. It means “big wind” 4.
