Nếu tính từ tận cùng bằng e, chúng ta chỉ thêm -r hoặc -st mà thôi: Nice - nicer - nicest Large - larger - largest 2. Nếu tính từ gốc tận cùng bằng phụ âm +y và trước nó là một phụ âm, chúng ta đổi y thành i trước khi thêm -er hoặc -est: Happy - happier - happiest Easy - easier - easiest Nhưng nếu tính từ tận cùng bằng nguyên âm + y, và trước nó là một nguyên âm thì y vẫn được giữ nguyên: Gay - gayer - gayest Gray - grayer - grayest 3.
