In reality a chip can be overclocked on itself without the BIOS and for all of you out there with 2 chips lieing around out opf ur pc i advise you to take a look at the bridges on the chip and note differences. All athlon xp chips had the bridges in the same position but different ones were connected to make the chip stock at different multis and voltages. Now for example all thouroughbreds have 5 L3 bridges and these control the cpu's multiplier. A 1600xp will have its multi locked at 10.5 by having the L3 in the order "open, open, open, open, closed." This locks the chip at 10.5. A 1700xp will have its L3 bridges set up as "open, open, open, open, open." and that locks it at a 11 multi. The multis on these chips are only locked for the lower multis meaning that it will be at 11 but u can normally access higher multis and not the lower ones which are what most people want so they can set their FSB higher. Now it has been figured out somehow that no matter what the L3 bridges are set at, if you connect the number 5 L3 bridge it allows u access to the lower multis and this seems the way most people unlock the thoroughbreds. The polomino cores were unlocked by connecting all the L1 bridges. Before any of this unlocking took place amd's athlon thunderbird chips were out and people figured out by using a graphite pencil it was easy enough to connect the L1 bridges to unlock the multi for higher overclocks. But amd naturally caught on and started cutting laser holes between the bridges that werent factory connected to stop overclocking from taking place. These bridges are cut deep into the copper layer so if you were to connect the bridges using conductive paint it would kill the chip so overclockers started to fill these with non conductive substances. I heard crazy glue is a favourite and also crayola crayons are used. Now for connecting the bridges you need to buy some sort of conductive paint or a trace pen. Conductive paint is easily available from auto shops as window defogger repair kits which have silver in the paint. A common mistake is trying to use thermal compound grease such as artic silver but these are nonconductive so incase some gets spread over bridges while applying heat sinks. So not you know how things work you want to get to unlocking these chips. Well the link is posted for the guide and you know which bridges are to be connected. So first off if using crazy glue or super glue to fill in the laser holes you need to tape off the bridges so that crazy glue only gets in the laser pits then you need to use a rasor to trim it down flush. MAKE SURE NONE GETS ON THE BRIDGE CONTACTS!! Using the crayon is easier as you just colour over the bridges and use a pencil eraser to remove excess from around the bridges. So you got your pits filled and now you need to proceed to tape off only the bridge you want to connect using tape. After doing this you can put a drop of paint of use ur conductive pen to connect the 2 bridges. I read that if ur brave enough and have steady hands you can use a conductive pen to draw around the number L3 bridge pit to connect that bridge. Sort of using a C shape connection. The bridges connect pins at the base of your cpu so if ur not up to the whole painting the top then you can always try you luck at getting a thin piece of wire maybe from a telephone line and tieing a knot around the pins that need to be connected. Once again the guide shows which pins you would need to set certain voltages and multis. Lots of info is available with better pics and i will post some links of sites for yall but goodluck to all trying this. here is a link for unlocking the polominos http://www.cluboverclocker.com/guid nlock/index.htm another polomino unlcking guide but with a video http://www4.tomshardware.com/column/20011124/ Here is one on unlcoking thoroughbreds http://www.overclockers.com.au/article.php?id=118669 And now just a usefull page on overclocking and unlocking athlons that some might enjoy looking at http://www.amdboard.com/ocspecial.html hey forgot to post the link for CPUFSB which allows you to change FSB in windows for those whose boards dont support much in the bios http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=420 This is Soft FSB for those looking for it.
