The two ministers reviewed co-operation and exchanged plans for the future, especially in maritime services, railways, domestic waterways and the environment. Of the project's VND2.8 trillion (US$134 million) investment, VND2.2 trillion ($105 million) was in the form of official development loans from Belgium and the remainder from the city budget. When completed in 2014, the Soai Rap River will be able to receive vessels of up to 50,000-70,000 deadweight tonnes (DWT) and will help speed up the construction of the Hiep Phuoc Port. This is part of a cooperation agreement between the Vietnamese and Belgian governments aiming to boost Vietnam’s export to EU. According to Joachim Coens, CEO of Port of Zeebrugge, the port has a good connection with consumption markets in the EU. Besides, there will be a direct sea route from Vietnam to the port next year, helping shorten transport duration and costs. In addition to the location advantage, the port’s distribution and electronic commodity auction services will create a new purchasing method which is different from the current method of purchasing tra fish. A sole tra fish supplier in Vietnam will directly work with an importer at the port via auctions.
