They decide to make sandwiches because most people like them. Mike’s favorite sandwich is turkey on a bun. Kayla’ s favorite sandwich is cheese on bread. They decide to make those two kinds of sandwiches. How many of each do they need? T o find out, they ask for a vote. Each student in the 30-member club votes. Including Mike, 20 students want turkey on a bun. The r est, including Kayla, want cheese on br ead. 4 Students vote for the kind of sandwich they want to eat. ca32os_lay_070109af_ll.indd 4 1/9/07 1:11:12 AM DIGITAL FINAL PROOF Kayla subtracts. 30 – 20 = 10 There ar e 30 students in the club. Kayla knows that 20 students want turkey on buns. She figures out that 10 students want cheese on bread. She says that two times as many students want turkey as cheese. Mr. Sanchez says to plan the same for adults. He thinks twice as many adults will also want turkey sandwiches as cheese. Ther e ar e 6 adults. There should be 4 turkey sandwiches and 2 cheese sandwiches for them. Now Kayla and Mike can make a shopping list. 5 Sandwiches Turkey Cheese Students 20 10 Adults 4 2 Total 24 12 ca32os_lay_070109af_ll.indd 5 1/9/07 1:11:22 AM DIGITAL FINAL PROOF Kayla and Mike ask Mike’s mom to help them figure out how much food to buy. They need enough food to make 24 turkey sandwiches and 12 cheese sandwiches. First, they figur e out how much turkey they will need. Mike’ s mom will buy turkey in packs of 10 servings. Three packs are enough for 24 sandwiches. They will have 6 servings left over. If they find packs with 8 servings, they will still need 3 packs. There will be no turkey left over. If they find packs of 12 servings, they will need only 2 packs. 6 3 packages of 10 servings 3 x 10 = 30 6 left over 3 packages of 8 servings 3 x 8 = 24 0 left over 2 packages of 12 servings 2 x 12 = 24 0 left over ca32os_lay_070109af_ll.indd 6 1/9/07 1:11:33 AM DIGITAL FINAL PROOF Kayla and Mike need to buy buns for the turkey sandwiches.
