The best ideas are then selected by each firm’s executives for implementation. International Business  Development In the first global program of its kind, student teams tackle business projects across the globe, ranging from creating business plans for nonprofit or government programs to providing market research or financial analysis for bur- geoning corporations. After working on each project throughout the spring semester, the student teams then travel for three weeks for hands-on experi- ence with their client orga- nizations. Social Sector Solutions Students partner with McKinsey & Co. to engage in innovative consulting projects, providing plans, creative ideas, and solutions for challenges unique to nonprofit organizations. Clean Tech to Market Students work with scientists at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to evaluate the commercial viability of next-generation technologies aimed at addressing critical energy and climate change issues. Corporate Social  Responsibility Students engage with companies such as Wal- Mart to develop business strategies that are both socially responsible and aligned with business objectives and core competencies. Entrepreneurship Students select from a variety of opportunities that challenge them to come up with real business solutions and business plans for high- potential enterprises. Managing New Product  Development Cross-disciplinary student teams develop innovative products or services from original ideas through first- pass prototypes. Real Estate   Investment Analysis Students work with stakeholders to conduct comprehensive analyses that include concept development, full market analysis, funding strategy, and entitlement and stakeholder consultation and approval strategies. For example, you will learn how to set direction in your strategy course, and how to manage complex projects and enterprises in your operations course. Throughout the core, you are taught the lessons of leading responsibly. Core courses, which make up about 40 percent of a typical student’s course of study, are usually all taken in the first year. Electives A central feature of the Berkeley MBA program is its level of flexibility that enables you to customize your studies according to your own goals. An impressive menu of original elective courses comprises 60 percent of the curriculum, meaning you begin to design your own course of study in the first year of the program. You may choose from a wide variety of constantly evolving electives and dual degree offerings—from within the Haas School and from the wider university—as well as design courses of your own in conjunction with a faculty member. Global Perspective Global experience is an integral aspect of the Berkeley MBA experience. Global business is part of many courses, including courses with a specific focus on international topics, such as Global Strategy and Multinational Enterprises, and Doing Business in China. You are encouraged to take advantage of international opportunities, such as spending a semester abroad, attending international seminars, planning study trips to other countries during breaks, or serving as a consultant through the International Business Development program. Learning Beyond the Classroom Providing students with hands-on exposure to real-world business situations is a key strength of the Berkeley MBA Program. You are required to take an experiential course that emphasizes innovative leadership. Additional experiential learning activities are required in many courses. You can also participate in numerous out-of- classroom opportunities that build upon your leadership skill set. Teck Ho William Halford, Jr. Family Professor of Marketing Learning, according to Professor Teck Ho,  is more “concrete when it is hands-on.”  That’s why at least one in four of each  of his marketing course sessions is  interactive. Using computer simulations  and role-playing, his students engage in  price wars and auctions, negotiate B2B  contracts, and put themselves in the shoes  of CEOs, marketing directors, suppliers,  and retail partners. In 2010, Ho was  recognized with the Berkeley Distinguished  Teaching  Award, the university’s highest  teaching honor. Kristiana Raube Adjunct Professor and Executive Director Haas professional faculty members  such as Dr. Kristiana Raube share expert  business and leadership knowledge  with Berkeley MBA students. In addition  to serving as executive director of Haas’  International Business Development  program, Raube is a renowned  researcher and teacher in the area of  health management who has worked to  increase health management capacity  through executive education and  program development in the US and  around the world. A team of four Berkeley MBA students won first place in the Developing World category of the IBM/Novartis NCD University Challenge by proposing a pharmacy membership program in Mexico for low to-middle income pregnant women with diabetes. • A Berkeley team, including two MBA 12’s, took 2nd place in the Hult Global Case Challenge judged by Bill Clinton. PHOTO #4 ABOVE August-September October January MarchFebruary April May A Dynamic Community Coming to Berkeley-Haas means joining a vibrant, thriving community of fellow  students, alumni, faculty, and staff. From networking mixers to annual conferences,  guest speakers to schoolwide events, there’s always something happening here. And  as a member of the Berkeley MBA student community, you have the opportunity to not  only attend these activities, but also to participate in creating and planning them. Here  is a sample of the many events and activities MBA students were a part of last year. November-December Orientation Week featured prominent business leaders, including Twitter Co-Founder and Berkeley-Haas Executive Fellow  Biz Stone.   Competitors from eight top business schools put their heads in the clouds for the first annual Haas Tech Challenge at the Haas School. Four Berkeley MBA students won the MIT  EdTech Case Competition with their plan to promote an online tool to help parents assist their children with schoolwork. • Bob Lutz, BS 61, MBA 62, retired vice chairman of General Motors, spoke to the Berkeley-Haas community about innovation and the electric car as part of the Dean’s Speaker Series. PHOTO #9 BELOW • After preparing their case analysis for more than 30 hours straight, five Berkeley MBA students claimed third prize in the Carlson School’s Elite Eight Brand  Management  Case Competition. • Designs for making a more energy-efficient refrigerator and providing privacy for sleeping passengers on international flights were among the projects displayed at the annual tradeshow for the Managing New   Product Development course. Berkeley-Haas students were on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winning teams . The student-run Women  in Leadership  Conference helped attendees go beyond mentorship with Pandora Executive Vice President Jessica  Steel. Berkeley MBAs won the coveted Golden Shovel for a 5th straight year after defeating Stanford in the NAIOP    Real Estate Challenge. Adobe Systems President and CEO Shantanu  Narayen spoke as 500 students from the full-time and evening & weekend MBA programs graduated at this year’s commencement ceremony. 1 2 3 5 7 8 109 11 • A panel of business leaders discussed the role of social media in enabling businesses to do good at the 9th annual Haas Celebration at Gap Headquarters in San Francisco.
