... 9Implementerbenefits The mainimplementerbenefitsincludedconsolidatingawarenesscampaigns,implementation and datacollection,reachingagreatertargetaudience and promotingpreventiveactionforbothALRI and diarrhoeawithasingletheme (the kitchen).TargetpopulationbenefitsTwoproductsbeingpromotedatonce(timesaved),amoreconsolidated/holisticunderstandingof health and apotentiallymoreenduringmessagewere the keybenefitsto the projectbeneficiaries.Trainedcommunityworkers The trainedlocalcommunityworkers,whopromoted and sold the productsdirectlytohouseholds,playanimportantroleingeneratinginterest and demandfor the products .Theyimpartedafeelingoffamiliarity and trust, and bridged the divide between implementers and community.Quantitativeimpact The shortdurationofthispilotstudydidnotallowforcollectingsufficientdatatoquantify the impacton health from the interventiontechnologies.Itwasalsonotpossibletonumericallydemonstrateanincreaseinsales and uptakespecificallydueto the synergy.Therewaslittledataoncompliance,hardmeasuresofuptakeorof‘treatment’effects(e.g.chlorineresiduals, air pollutionmeasurements),or health improvementsinrelationtoeitherproduct.However,reporteduseofWGforwatertreatmentrosefrom1to34%for the interventionhouseholds, and therewasanincreasefrom1to12%inMMSstoveuseinthosesamehouseholds.During the project220stovesweresoldtoindividualslocatedin the interventionareawhile442weresoldtoindividualsoutside the intervention.Although the reasonsforgreatersalesoutsideMambandahavenotbeenspecificallyinvestigated,anecdotalaccountsindicatethat the stoveswereunaffordableinMambanda,evenwith the 30%subsidy.However,wealthierhouseholdsoutsideMambandacouldafford the stoves and foundthemtechnologicallysuperiortootherstoveson the market.Discussion The combinedapproachofenvironmental health interventionswasreceivedwellbyimplementers and beneficiariesalike.Keygainsnotedbyimplementersincludedefficiencyonseveralfronts(e.g.numberofcommunityinterventions,time,cost), and improvementsthroughconsolidatedpromotion.Keydifficultiesaroseinrespectofaffordabilityof the interventions(principally the stove),funding, and inmanagingprojectsustainabilityin the faceofchallenginglocalcircumstances.Pricewasanimportantbarrierto the saleofMMS,whichneverthelessbenefitedfromconsiderableawareness and interest. The projectwouldhavebenefittedfrommoresystematic and detailedmonitoring and evaluation. ...
